Tomoya Nakagawa
From intricately designed bows to blazing metallic blades, Tomoya Nakagawa leaves no medium unexplored. He redefines the boundaries of nail art by drawing inspiration from the elemental, incorporating complex molecular structures and tentacle-like projections into his designs. We delve into his biological fascination, creative process, and all things nail.
Catalyst for Career Change
Before moving to New York, you worked as a fisherman. What prompted this career shift?
My boyfriend at the time was a manicurist in New York. During the pandemic, I couldn’t leave the house, so I started learning nail art from him. Although I’m currently based in Tokyo, I sometimes work as a fisherman on Kii Oshima Island in Wakayama Prefecture.
Creative Process and Skill Acquisition
Your work appears highly intricate and labor-intensive. Is this accurate, and how did you develop these skills?
I use Computer-Aided Design for 3D designs, which are printed with a 3D printer, airbrushed, and then assembled into the final product. I learned these skills through YouTube and other online resources.
Nature as a Muse
Your designs often feature complex molecular structures and biological themes. Would you say nature is a central inspiration for your work?
Absolutely. I love nature. Besides fishing, I enjoy diving, mountain climbing, and skiing. These experiences and information from nature naturally influence my work.
Current Projects
Your Instagram showcases an array of impressive designs, like the Keisei Kawahara nails for GQ Japan. What are you working on currently?
I’m working on figure design and collaborating with a specific brand and a cosmetic brand. It’s a busy time!
Exploring Digital Fashion
Congratulations on your Nyan Collection with Genies! Do you think the digital fashion realm allows you to expand your creativity?
Thank you. Yes, I enjoy trying new things and look forward to continually challenging myself.
Balancing Craft and Career
There’s a notion that turning a craft into a career can diminish the joy in it. What has your experience been?
Creating my own work and working with clients are different processes, but both are exciting. I enjoy all kinds of work.
Dream Clients
You’ve collaborated with industry giants like Rina Sawayama, Björk, and Saweetie. Who would be your dream client?
I don’t have anyone specific in mind; I’m open to working on any intriguing project.
Shock Value in Nail Art
Your designs challenge conventional nail art norms. Is shock a common reaction to your work? Is this something you aim for?
Honestly, I don’t focus too much on reactions. I’m happy to receive both positive and negative feedback.
Expanding Creative Horizons
In addition to nail art, you’ve created some amazing accessories. Do you plan to explore this creative path further?
Yes, I intend to actively pursue figure and character design. However, I will always love nail art.
