It’s only been a couple of months since Soho House opened its doors in Barcelona, yet it already feels like an integral part of the city. Chris Glass, the European Membership Director of Soho House since 2009, shares a similar sentiment. Despite his busy schedule, he’s now contemplating buying a house here, possibly near the Gothic Quarter, home to the renowned hotel and international club celebrated for its comfort and creativity.
“We want Soho House to feel like a home away from home,” says Chris Glass, and it truly does. Everything here is designed for comfort. Beyond the hotel rooms, the fifth-floor social club exudes a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere, perfect for reading or working away from the typical office hustle, amidst the bustle of waitstaff. One floor up, Soho House’s rooftop pool offers magnificent views of the port and city, while another pool resides in the spa below. Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the fully equipped and welcoming gym on the first floor. The house also features restaurants and soon a cinema. Additionally, Little Beach House is set to open next year in Garraf, near Barcelona. Let’s hear more from Chris.
Chris, could you introduce yourself and your role at Soho House?
Chris Glass is a Georgia-born Berliner with a love for his mom’s cooking, travel, and glossy magazines (#iheartmetal). He has been the European Membership Director for Soho House since 2009, traveling across Europe to support existing Houses and fostering new communities in cities where they are launching.
You’ve been frequently visiting Barcelona since the opening of Soho House here. What are your thoughts on the city and what do you enjoy most about it?
Initially, I was hesitant about the Barcelona project. Having visited several times as a tourist and not enjoying it much, my perspective changed upon meeting locals and experiencing the culture. Now, I love the city and am even considering buying property here. Barcelona’s size is perfect – not too big, not too small. Beyond the usual attractions like the weather and the sea, I appreciate the subtle charms: the design of doors, the sidewalks in Eixample, reflections on the water at the marina, the silence atop Tibidabo, and the unexpected great food spots.
For those unfamiliar, what is Soho House?
Founded in London in 1995, Soho House is a home away from home for people in creative fields, with Houses in the UK, Berlin, Istanbul, New York, West Hollywood, Miami, Chicago, and Toronto. Unlike other clubs focused on wealth and status, Soho House gathers communities with a shared creative spirit, encompassing sectors like film, fashion, advertising, music, art, and media.
Soho House Barcelona opened two months ago. How has it been so far? What feedback have you received?
Despite the recent opening, it feels like Soho House has always been here. This has been one of our best openings. Members quickly understood how to use the House and how it fits into their daily lives, appreciating the change it brought to the city’s social scene. The team’s warmth and engagement have been particularly impressive. Our events offer new ways for people to meet and learn. The facilities here are unparalleled in the city, creating a somewhat magical atmosphere.
Social private clubs are more traditional in countries like the UK and the US. In cities like Berlin or Istanbul, do you find the public reception different due to a lack of tradition?
Each opening is unique, and we’ve learned not to impose the English or American way on new cities. We create clubs that serve the local community, allowing for initial confusion which leads to education and awareness over time. The best compliment I’ve received was from a member who said they couldn’t imagine life without Soho House after it opened.
How can someone become a member of Soho House? Is there a specific profile required?
Interested individuals can apply through our website, providing general information about themselves and their contributions to our creative community. Applications are reviewed quarterly by a committee of local Barcelonans. Membership costs 125 Euros per month for local access and 150 Euros for global access, including facilities like the gym, pool, cinema, and events.
Are there benefits for members under 27?
Yes, we offer a 50% discount for members under 27, who keep this rate until they turn 30. We also offer a 50% discount on food and drinks on Mondays for our U27 members. This encourages young people to join and benefit from our non-traditional workspaces and networking opportunities.
Some creatives might feel hesitant to join a private club. How do you address concerns about exclusivity?
Our aim is not to be exclusive but to provide a home away from home, an inclusive place. We respond to traditional clubs focused on money or status by creating an environment many creatives want. We focus on what we are, not what we aren’t, providing a rewarding opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals.
Tell us about Soho House’s scholarship program for creative young people.
The scholarship program started in Istanbul to help talented young people without financial means. It includes a complimentary one-year membership, programming, and mentoring to advance their careers. Recipients also contribute something back to the Soho House community. We’re setting up a similar program in Barcelona, and anyone interested can contact us for more information.
What’s your favorite part of Soho House Barcelona?
Although I avoid the gym to enjoy our delicious food more, one of my favorite spots is the bar, where I work on my laptop and watch the friendly and beautiful people coming and going.
Tell us about the upcoming Soho House in Garraf.
The Little Beach House in Garraf is set to open next year, likely by summer. It will offer a small selection of rooms, beach dining, and various programs for members. Barcelona members will have access to both Houses, enhancing their experience.
Can you recommend any restaurants at Soho House?
I’m a huge fan of Chicken Shop, a must-visit for me. The Club’s menu changes monthly, balancing local Catalan dishes with global standards. Our new Italian restaurant, Cecconi’s, offers beautiful dining and delectable food, like the spaghetti lobster with Vino Tinto.
Finally, why should people join Soho House?
Soho House is about inclusion and celebrating creativity, providing a luxurious yet unpretentious setting. It serves as a hub for friends, family, and personal moments. What you get out of it depends on what you put into it.
